5 Things to Check Before Importing Wooden Cutlery from China

Sourcing wooden cutlery from China is not complicated. But the difference between a smooth order and a costly mistake usually comes down to five things that buyers often overlook during the inquiry stage.

We have been manufacturing birch wooden cutlery since 2012 and have worked with importers across Europe and North America. These are the five points we recommend checking before you place a deposit with any supplier.

1. Is It a Factory or a Trading Company?

This is the first question, and it matters more than most buyers realize.

A trading company buys from factories and resells to you. They add a margin, they have less control over production schedules, and when a quality issue arises, they have to go back to the factory just like you would.

A factory like Runda Wooden Industry produces in-house. We run 10 automated production lines in our 30,000-square-meter facility in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang. Our daily output is over 10 million pieces.

How to verify: Ask for the factory address, then check it against the business license. Ask for a short video call showing the production floor. A real factory can do this within a day. A trading company will usually hesitate.

2. Which Certifications Do They Actually Hold?

Certifications are not decoration. They determine whether your shipment clears customs and whether your customers accept the product.

For the European market, FSC certification is essential for wooden products. For the US market, FDA compliance is required for food contact materials. SGS testing reports provide third-party verification of food safety.

Runda holds FSC, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, SGS, FDA, LFGB, and BSCI certifications. We can provide certificate copies and test reports on request.

What to watch for: Some suppliers claim certifications they do not hold, or they hold certificates that have expired. Always ask for a scanned copy and verify the certificate number.

3. How Do They Control Quality?

Wooden cutlery quality issues usually fall into four categories: rough edges, inconsistent thickness, warping from moisture, and breakage under load.

A supplier with proper quality control will have documented procedures at each stage. At Runda, we check moisture content before production, inspect surface finish after polishing, and verify weight and thickness before packaging.

What to ask: Request their quality control process in writing. Ask how they handle a defective batch. A supplier who cannot answer this clearly is a risk.

4. What Packaging Options Do They Offer?

Packaging affects your landed cost, your storage, and how the product reaches your end customer.

The most common options for wooden cutlery are bulk polybag packing, individual wrapping, and custom header card packaging for retail.

Runda offers three standard carton configurations: 10,000 pieces per carton, 5,000 pieces per carton, and 2,000 pieces per carton with custom header cards. We also accept custom packaging designs.

What to ask: Confirm the exact quantity per bag, per carton, and the carton dimensions. These numbers affect your freight calculation directly.

5. Can They Handle Mixed Container Orders?

If you need multiple products, a supplier who cannot mix items in one container will force you to pay for multiple shipments.

Runda supports mixed container loading. You can combine forks, knives, spoons, coffee stirrers, and other wooden products in a single 40ft container. This reduces your freight cost and simplifies your supply chain.

What to ask: Confirm the minimum order quantity for each item and whether they can consolidate your order into one shipment.

A Note on Price

If a quote seems significantly lower than others you have received, ask why. Common reasons include thinner material, lower grade wood, skipped polishing steps, or missing certifications. These savings usually show up later as customer complaints or customs issues.

Final Checklist

Before you place an order with any wooden cutlery supplier, confirm these five points:

1. Factory or trading company verified
2. Certifications valid and documented
3. Quality control process explained
4. Packaging specifications confirmed
5. Mixed container capability confirmed
